Special Education Paraprofessional
Special Education Paraprofessionals work closely with teachers and administration in ensuring students receive the educational attention they need to succeed. Certification/credential is attainable upon the successful completion of this course and other specified documentation.
An enthusiastic, well-prepared paraprofessional can greatly increase the efficiency in the classroom.
Today’s paraprofessional plays an increasingly prominent role in the instruction of students with disabilities. Paraprofessionals provide essential support for students with disabilities and their teachers.
Nationwide, the majority of special education paraprofessionals assist with the following activities:
- Provide instructional support
- Modify materials
- Implement behavior management plans
- Monitor hallways, study hall, etc.
- Meet with teachers on lesson planning, curriculum, and evaluation of programs
- Collect data on students
- Provide personal care assistance

- History and legal foundations of special education
- Roles and responsibilities
- Ethical and professional conduct
- IEP participation
- Disability awareness and learning strategies
- Planning, problem solving, and communication
- Data collection and progress monitoring
- Safe and healthy learning environments
- Behavior strategies
- Bloodborne pathogens
The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDH) requires 100% attendance in order to qualify for certification.
First Aid and CPR through the American Heart Association is included in this class.
