Creative Welding

Ideal for beginner metal artists, this class is the perfect opportunity for the artistic mind to play! You will explore the different ways to shape and form your ideas in the shop. This class will utilize a CNC plasma table, it will cut in 2 dimensions(flat) but these items can easily be welded together to form a piece of artwork. Seasonally aligned, create a fall project in October or a Christmas project in December.

Customized Welding

We begin by mastering the basics of structural welding on plate, you will learn to properly execute fillet, lap, and groove welds. After the basics of plate welding are completed, there is potential to move on to pipe welding, if applicable to your welding goals. We will utilize TIG and/or combo processes when learning to weld pipe, keeping in congruence with industry standard. Please keep in mind that pipe welding is a highly sought-after skill, with excellent pay, but it will take more than one 5-week course to become adept enough to pass your tests.   Standard plate tests as relevant to manufacturing include 2G, 3G, and 4G positions; Pipe tests will cover 2G, 5G, and 6G positions.

We cover the gamut from semi-auto GMAW (Mig) and FCAW(Flux), to GTAW (Tig) and SMAW (Stick). You will learn these processes on carbon steel, there is the possibility of learning to weld exotic alloys, if you have shown enough skill to proceed to that level OR have experience welding in industry and are looking to develop existing skills. Exotic alloys will not be offered at the beginner’s level, as a foundation of knowledge and welding ability is necessary here.

Welding

For the following welding phase classes, students should bring the following on the first day of class:

  • Welding hood
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves – heavy and thin
  • Welpers (needle-nosed pliers)
  • Boots
  • Welding cap
  • Green or leather sleeves (optional)

PHASE I: In this class you will learn welding fundamentals including safety equipment, welding joints and positions, welding and cutting processes, oxyfuel gas cutting equipment and supplies, and plasma arc cutting.

PHASE II: This class focuses on shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and stick welding. Learn to select the correct electrode, current, and polarity for welding with the SMAW process. You will also learn how to strike a welding arc and create acceptable welds on all five basic joints in all positions.

PHASE III: Phase III focuses on gas metal and flux-cored arc welding (GMAW & FCAW) and MIG-wire feed welding. Learn how to select the proper arc welding machine, wire feeder, shielding gas, flow rate, and welding wire type to produce an acceptable weld in all types of joints in all positions.

PHASE IV: Phase IV focuses on gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), TIG, print reading, weld symbols, weld gauges, and inspecting and testing welds. Learn to select the proper welding source, polarity, shielding gas, flow rate, tungsten type and diameter, nozzle size, and filler rod to produce an acceptable weld. You will also learn how to read prints, inspect, and test your welds.

PHASE V: Phase V focuses on pipe and tube welding. Learn to weld pipe and tube using SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW welding processes. You will also learn about non-destructive evaluation methods for pipe weld quality.

Welding, Farm & Hobby

Welding is a crucial skill for farmers that can save both time and money, while also increasing productivity. The following class series will get you started welding.

If you’re brand new to welding, we suggest starting with Welding on the Farm and building up to the other classes. If you’ve not new to welding, start with any class you wish.

WELDING ON THE FARM: With a basic understanding of welding, you can repair broken equipment, fabricate new parts, and even create your own machinery. This course focuses on MIG welding, which is the most common type of welding for farmers. It is relatively easy to master and does not require a lot of equipment.

STRUCTURAL WELDING REPAIR: Designed for novice welders, learn best practices for repairing structures, equipment, boats, tractors, and more. Building on the processes learned in Welding on the Farm, we will focus on the repair aspect of fabrication using the best weld process for the material at hand.

You will learn how to work with a variety of materials including cast iron, carbon and stainless steel, and aluminum, a notoriously difficult alloy. While stick is a great process to weld cast iron, it’s not ideal to use with aluminum. TIG is the best process to weld aluminum but not if the job is to be welded outdoors. Learn to navigate these trade rules from our expert instructor. You will have the chance to learn new processes and practice them on common farm and ranch repair jobs with one-on-one instruction in our state-of-the-art weld shop.

PRECISION WELDING: This class will level up your welding game. If you attended our Welding on the Farm and Structural Repair classes you have already learned the fundamentals of welding safety, best practices, and proper execution of welded joints. For the new student joining us without this prior training, have no fear; our expert instructor can get you up to speed.

This course will focus on specialty processes like TIG, learn the nuances from a seasoned aerospace welder who regularly fabricates parts for our military. Techniques on when to preheat-post heat, use of proper gas and equipment for exotic alloys, material prep for aluminum and SS, and more.
